What Makes a Strong Resume in 2025?

The job market has evolved dramatically. Resumes today must satisfy two audiences simultaneously: Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that scan for keywords, and human recruiters who spend an average of just 6–7 seconds on initial review. Your resume must be keyword-optimized, visually clean, and easy to scan.

Essential Resume Sections

• Professional summary — 2–3 sentence overview of your expertise and value proposition
• Work experience — Reverse chronological, with quantifiable achievements
• Education — Degree, institution, graduation year

Writing Achievement-Focused Bullet Points

The most effective resume bullet points follow the PAR formula: Problem, Action, Result. Instead of "Managed social media accounts," write "Grew Instagram following by 340% in 8 months through targeted content strategy, generating 2,400 new leads."

ATS Optimization Tips

• Include exact keywords from the job description
• Use standard section headings (not creative alternatives)
• Avoid tables, graphics, and text boxes — ATS often can't parse these
• Submit as PDF or DOCX as instructed
• Use a standard, readable font (Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman)

Resume Length Guidelines

0–5 years experience: 1 page. 5–10 years: 1–2 pages. 10+ years: 2 pages maximum for most roles (academics and executives may be longer). Recruiters rarely read beyond page 2.
