What Is an SRT Subtitle File?
SRT (SubRip Subtitle) is the most widely supported subtitle format. An SRT file is a plain text file containing numbered subtitle entries, each with a timestamp indicating when the subtitle appears and disappears, followed by the subtitle text. SRT files are supported by YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix, VLC, and virtually all video players and platforms.
SRT File Format Structure
Each subtitle entry consists of four parts:
1. Sequential number (1, 2, 3...)
2. Timestamp: 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:04,000
3. The subtitle text (one or two lines)
4. A blank line separating entries
